My husband and I have been picking blueberries at various farms in the area for years. It doesn’t take long to pick a couple of gallons, and I swear the berries are bigger than anything that can be bought in grocery stores. Plus they freeze well, so the blueberries can be used year-round (assuming they don’t get eaten first). Needless to say, I feel well-prepared to help you get ready for blueberry picking near Birmingham.
Some Blueberry Picking Pointers
Since blueberry season typically starts in June, I do have a few pointers:
- Go early, as in 8:00 a.m. or earlier if possible. Most places that we’ve been to are open fields with little shade. The earlier you can go, the better.
- Wear a hat and sunscreen. Again, most places we’ve been have very little shade!
- Wear good shoes, preferably close-toed. You may be doing a bit of walking. I would also recommend rain boots if it has recently rained.
- If possible, verify that your chosen farm will be open on the day you want to go. This means checking social media or even a phone call. I especially recommend this when it’s early or late in the season, or if your chosen farm is highly-traveled.
