Back-to-School Vision Check :: Why Eye Health Matters for Academic Success

We are proud to partner with UAB Callahan Eye. This is sponsored content.

The back-to-school season brings excitement, new routines, and fresh learning opportunities. But it can also raise new worries for parents. Even if you’ve checked off every item on your child’s school supply list, one essential factor often gets overlooked, and that’s your child’s vision.

The transition from lazy summer mornings to long days in the classroom is a big adjustment. If your child struggles with concentrating, reading, or learning new material, their vision may be the reason.

We sat down with Dr. Marcela Frazier, a pediatric optometrist at UAB Callahan Eye, to discuss how children’s vision directly impacts school performance and what parents can do to protect their child’s eye health.

Your Child’s Vision and The Classroom

Good vision is critical to your child’s success in school. Kids rely on their eyesight to read textbooks, follow lessons on the board, and engage with digital devices. When vision problems go undetected, they can lead to various issues, including the following:

  • Difficulty reading and comprehending text
  • Trouble concentrating on written tasks
  • Avoidance of assignments that require detailed vision
  • Frustration with schoolwork

Sometimes, children with undiagnosed vision problems show behaviors that resemble ADHD or other learning challenges. They may squirm in their seat to see the board, tilt their head while reading, or appear uninterested in learning. In reality, they’re just struggling to see clearly. Vision is essential to how your child learns, and not being able to see well can make it difficult to maintain focus or engage with visual learning materials.

Common Eye Conditions in Children

Many pediatric vision problems can be easily addressed with glasses, thankfully! Several of the most common eye conditions that can affect school-age children are as follows:

  • Refractive errors: nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Strabismus (crossed or wandering eyes)
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Blocked tear ducts

It’s important to look out for signs that your child might not see well, especially if they have a strong family history of eye problems. Key indicators and symptoms of vision issues include:

  • Squinting or tilting their head to see
  • Getting very close to reading materials
  • Struggling with appropriate eye contact
  • Closing one eye while reading
  • Blinking excessively
  • Rubbing their eyes
  • Complaining of headaches

One of the biggest challenges in detecting eye problems in young children is that they do not always present the classic signs of struggling to see well. Routine pediatric eye exams are the best way to catch problems early.

Why an Eye Exam Belongs on Your Back-to-School List

Regular eye exams are crucial for your child, as they ensure healthy vision development as well as help diagnose and treat treatable problems. Early detection of conditions like lazy eye, strabismus, and even cataracts allows for timely intervention and can prevent long-term issues.

While routine eye exams should be on every parent’s radar, children who present symptoms or have family members with vision problems should be seen as soon as possible.

Children without risk factors or symptoms should have regular vision screenings with their pediatrician or at school starting at birth. These exams assess visual skills and identify potential problems early on, and they help ensure that your child is set up for success.

Set Your Child Up for Success This School Year

Your child’s vision plays a direct role in how they learn, grow, and thrive in school. By scheduling routine eye exams and watching for early warning signs, you can make sure your child is ready to succeed in the classroom!
