My Birmingham Mom Christmas List

Birmingham has so much to offer, and our small businesses really deserve our support! I’m a big advocate for shopping local, so here is my Birmingham Christmas list, filled with gifts I’ve received, given, or want, all from local businesses and entrepreneurs!

1. Little Professor Membership

The Little Professor membership (now offered both annually and monthly!) is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Not only do I get book discounts with this, I also get so. much. free. coffee. There are members-only events occasionally, and you can be the first to register for certain community-wide events, as a member, too!

2. Pens & Pencils from Bookmarked

I’m a big fan of all stationary, but Blackwing Pencils really deserve a shout-out. I not only have a box of them, but I also have the branded sharpener and a pencil tip protector. These jotter pens come in lots of colors, and are super affordable, too! Really, all the pens and notebooks sold at Bookmarked are top-notch, so you can’t go wrong gifting any of them to the stationary lover in your life.

3. Coffee (& Accessories) from Baba Java

A really fun gift for the coffee snob in your life is the Baba Java coffee variety box. You can get 4 different coffees, plus some other goodies. For a gift that keeps on giving, check out their coffee subscription. Also, don’t sleep on their coffee accessories! I’ve gotten a few of these as gifts, and they are used frequently.

4. Jewelry from The Chasm Co.

The oval huggies I bought from here a few months ago are still are my very favorite earrings to wear. I originally went to a Chasm Co. pop-up shop intending to get a piece of jewelry with charms from her charm bar, but the earrings stole my heart first. Whether you need earrings, a bracelet, or a necklace, and whether you need something simple or full of fun charms, you’ll find a perfect jewelry gift, here.

5. Perfume Oil from Clover Bloom

I don’t ever wear strong perfume, and I don’t really like it when others around me are wearing it. So, the fact that perfume is on this list is a testament to how great these scents are. They’re so light, but they’ll also make you feel put-together without overpowering everyone’s noses around you. They also come in a convenient roller-ball, which is big selling point for me.

6. Jessica Kime Landscape

I’m not an art connoisseur by any means, but these moody landscapes are exactly my vibe. I really love the pre-framed Curate Collection pieces, but honestly her work is all so good. Plus, she sells all sizes of paintings, so you don’t need to have a large space to fill before investing in her art.

7. Village Apothecary Candle

I’m really picky about scented things, but there are so many scents of these candles I’d love to have! My number one would be the Palo Santal scent, because I tend to like woodsy and spicy smells, but they’re all winners, truly.

8. The Choice Bakery Baked Goods or Giftcard

This Korean-inspired local bakery is like no others in town. Have you ever had a beef bulgogi pastry? Because I have, and it’s amazing, as is everything else I’ve tried from here. Honestly, now that I’m thinking about it, I want something from her right now.

9. Album from Seasick Records

You can get a wide array of albums here, but I’m currently quite partial to all things Band of Horses on vinyl, especially their Live at the Ryman albums. Be sure to check out their Seasick Exclusives and their section dedicated to Alabama Musicians if you visit!

10. My Southern Kitchen by Ivy Odom

Ivy kept popping up on my IG feed, and it was an embarrassingly long time before I realized she was local to Birmingham! Her recipes are an ode to Southern cuisine, so I know this book will be really useful in any Alabama kitchen. Don’t forget to grab it at a local bookstore!

Ashley G
I currently live in the Oak Mountain area, but originally I’m from a small, one-redlight town in North Alabama. I attended Auburn University where I met my husband, a Birmingham native, and married him a couple of months after getting my Bachelors degree in 2011. Although I studied PreMed/Microbiology, I have never actually worked in the field. Instead, I have had many random jobs from seamstress to private English tutor while helping my husband through seminary. Now I have my dream job of being a stay-at-home-mom to my three daughters; E is 9, M is 7, and C is 1.5. Although my original dream of living overseas full-time isn’t likely to happen anytime soon, I am still involved in the internationals’ ministry at my church. When I’m not busy with my girls or church, you can find me cooking, listening to music or podcasts, reading, or drinking coffee while doing any of the above.
