Navigating restaurants with a family of eight comes with unique challenges. When you’re feeding an army of varying ages, you need more than just a good kids’ menu. You need physical space to spread out, an energetic atmosphere to drown out toddler noise, built-in distractions for little ones so the parents can actually relax a bit, and a final bill that doesn’t feel like a second mortgage. With all of that in mind, here are my top three Birmingham restaurants for big families.
1. Davenport’s Pizza Palace – Vestavia Hills
Located in the Vestavia Hills City Center, this local favorite is practically designed for big families. It provides a casual environment where a large group won’t feel self-conscious if the little ones get a bit loud.
- The Kid Distraction: There is a built-in game room and arcade inside, giving older kids or parents with toddlers a perfect spot to wander around while waiting for the food.
- Open Turf Space: The restaurant looks directly out onto the City Center’s large, artificial turf common area. Little kids can step outside to run wild and stretch their legs in plain view of the outdoor seating.
- Crowd-Pleasing Food: They serve classic, hand-tossed pizzas that are perfect for ordering multiple large pies to feed an army. The Meat Lover’s is our favorite.
- Parent Perk: Happy Hour is Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m.
2. Vecchia Pizzeria & Mercato – Hoover
Situated in the beautiful, walk-friendly Preserve neighborhood in Hoover, Vecchia is a paradise for parents of high-energy toddlers and big family groups who still appreciate a quaint, outdoor dining experience.
- Spacious Setup: The indoor and outdoor dining areas feature roomy configurations and shared tables that easily accommodate extra large family groups. Friday evenings sometimes feature live jazz music which sure puts a lovely little end-cap on the week.
- Casual Dining: The menu centers on wood-fired pizzas, paninis, and Italian dishes that make it ideal for large-batch family ordering where everyone can easily find something to love.
- Gelato Nextdoor: Also part of this charming little streetfront is Vecchia Gelato & Cafe. Don’t skip it! Eat the pizza then head over for gelato (and an espresso!). Need I say more?
- Unbeatable Outdoor Space: They usually offer a bounce house on weekends in their “free kidzone.” The charming patio opens right up to a neighborhood green space where kids can run around on the grass or play.
3. Monday Night Brewing Social Club – Downtown
Located downtown near the Parkside district, a few steps from Regions Field, this trendy space is a home run for large families looking for an energetic, casual vibe where kids can move around freely.
- Spacious Outdoor Patio: The venue features a huge, open-air outdoor courtyard with plenty of room to park a stroller, pull together large tables, and let toddlers wander around without bothering traditional diners. Pets are welcome, too!
- Family-Friendly Menu: Unlike a lot of breweries that rely solely on heavy bar food, here they serve excellent artisanal pizzas, tacos, and shareable snacks that are perfect for a large family style meal. Our favorite is the “Jurassic Nachos” with shrimp. We order one and it typically feeds all of the kids. Win!
- Loud and Lively: The ambient noise level is naturally high, nestled into the downtown area. If you’re lucky, the trains will pass by while you’re there which is always a fun attraction for little ones.
