The Christmas season can be costly for various reasons, so it’s important that you find ways to enjoy the season without breaking the bank. Are you aware that downtown Birmingham has these four great events that are family-friendly and free?

1. Holiday Ornament Trail on 20th
Stroll along 20th street between 1st Avenue North and Linn Park to view ten larger than life ornaments from November 15th- January 5th. This festive project features 4-foot ornaments that have been hand-painted by local artists, displaying their interpretation of holiday magic. Take a walk and enjoy the creative work of some of Birmingham’s most talented artists!
2. The Great Elf Door Hunt
Alongside the ornament trail, you may continue your stroll on a scavenger hunt to find all 20 elf doors that line the streets in front of restaurants, businesses, and landmarks. These 5×7 elf doors are a creation of students at Alabama School of Fine Arts and can be found between Linn Park and the Rotary Trail and between 18th and 22nd Street North.
3. Festive Street Performers
Come to Birmingham’s main street (20 Street North) or Five Points to enjoy live performances by Birmingham locals. Performers include dancers, vocalists, instrumentalists, and fine artists. Please see the website for 2026 dates and locations.
4. Regions Bank Christmas Tree
As you make your way home, be sure to drive by the Regions Bank building (1900 5th Avenue North at 20th Street North) to see the iconic Christmas display! What you will see wrapped around the building in a stunning array of lights–two Christmas trees, a wreath, and a stocking. This special tree lighting is happening on November 28th from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
All of this and a more extensive calendar of the festive events happening downtown can be found on Downtown Birmingham’s holiday page.
