footballBirmingham, Alabama, holds the title of “Football Capital of the South,” and for good reason! The city serves as a hub for football activities in the region. There is a range of football programs available for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy as spectators or as participants.

Birmingham Mom Collective is proud to partner with the National Football Foundation and the Future for Football to provide a look at the different football programs around Birmingham.

Birmingham Stallions

The Birmingham Stallions, winners of the inaugural USFL season championship trophy in 2022, will once again be in action this spring. The United States Football League (USFL) will begin year two at Protective Stadium on April 15th. Half the USFL games across all eight teams are played right here in our backyard, so this is a great opportunity for the family to experience professional football locally. 

Alabama Fire

The Alabama Fire Women’s Tackle Football team is one of the most successful women’s football programs in the country. The Fire competes in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) league. The team has made multiple playoff appearances and has been featured in national media outlets such as ESPN and the NFL Network. The WFA league, with 14 teams, competes in May and June.

Birmingham Hammers

The Birmingham Hammers Wheelchair Football team plays in the United States Power Soccer Association (USPSA). This team, founded in 2017, has quickly become a beloved part of the Birmingham football community. Wheelchair football offers an excellent opportunity for people with disabilities to get involved in the sport and enjoy the camaraderie and competition that comes with it.

College Game Day

If you prefer the pageantry and tradition of college football, Central Alabama is home to several college football programs. Nearby teams include the University of Alabama, Auburn University, Samford University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). These programs attract some of the best college football players in the country and have rich histories of success on the field. There are many great options to enjoy a college game day experience close to home.

Friday Night Lights

High School Football is also a big deal in Birmingham. The city and surrounding areas produce some of the best high school football players in the country! Whether you’re a parent of a high school player or just a fan of the sport, attending a high school football game in Birmingham is an experience you won’t forget.

Youth Tackle Football is an excellent way for kids to get involved in the sport and learn the fundamentals of the game. Birmingham has several youth football programs available, many of which have a strong focus on safety and player development. 

Varsity Flag Football

Girls High School Flag Football is a relatively new addition to the Birmingham football scene, but it’s quickly gaining popularity. Several high schools in Birmingham now offer girl’s flag football, which is a fast-paced version of the sport. It’s a great way for girls to get involved in football and enjoy the competitive spirit that comes with it at the high school varsity level.

Flag Football is another popular alternative to tackle football, and Birmingham has several programs available, for both youth and adults. Our local flag football programs offer a fun and competitive environment for players of all skill levels. Team Behind the Teams :: Monday Morning Quarterback Club

The football-related organization at the heart of football in Birmingham is the Monday Morning Quarterback Club. Monday Morning Quarterback Club (MMQBC), founded in 1946, is a non-profit organization that promotes football in the Birmingham community. The club meets every Monday during football season and features guest speakers from the world of football, including coaches, players, and broadcasters. The MMQBC also hosts a weekly radio broadcast that covers high school football games throughout the state of Alabama.

Through its fundraising initiatives, the MMQBC has provided over $10 million to local charities and scholarship programs since its founding. The club is committed to giving back to the community. Its efforts have had a positive impact on countless individuals and organizations over the years, making the club a vital part of the city’s rich football history.
