Great Tacos in Birmingham

October fourth is National Taco Day! Our city has plenty of options for this dish, both authentic and less authentic. (Both are delightful in their own way!) So, if you’d like to celebrate this wonderful holiday, check out one of these great spots for tacos in Birmingham.

Taco Mama

Are these authentic tacos? No. Are they still delightful? Absolutely! There are so many good options, but my favorite is the Mama’s Chorizo, and I actually rotate sides because so many of them are delicious! The cheese dip and guacamole are also big hits around here.

Moss Rock Tacos & Tequila

First of all, you should know that kids eat free here on Mondays with the purchase of an adult entree. On Tuesdays, they have a $2 featured taco, so if you’re indecisive like myself, just visit on a Tuesday and get whatever is on sale! With the money you save, you can grab an appetizer, like the chicarrones or grilled street corn. Yummy!

Mi Pueblo

This Homewood staple may be known as a grocery store, but there is also an AMAZING restaurant in the back. If you’re on the hunt for some authentic Central and South American food, this is the place to be. Get your tacos, outfit them with all kinds of toppings from the taco bar, and also try some other dishes, like tamales or their made-in-house desserts. When you’re finished, take your time walking out. Meander the aisles and take in the experience of shopping at a supermarket unlike most others in Birmingham. Visiting Mi Pueblo is just all around a great time.

Ladybird Taco

This new Lane Parke restaurant is a much-welcomed addition to the area. With ample fillings choices like brisket and potatoes, some vegetarian options, and quite a few breakfast tacos, you’ll find tacos here unlike any others in the city. Plus, they have coffee and espresso beverages, making this a perfect brunch spot. (I know I would happily have tacos for three meals a day, and this is the easiest way to check breakfast off that list.)

Taco Trucks

If you’d like a quick, authentic taco experience, then look no further than one of the many taco trucks in the area. What these places may lack in ambiance, they make up for in flavor and affordability! You really can’t go wrong here, but if you don’t love spicy food, maybe go light on the salsa; they typically have a quite a (delicious) kick.

I currently live in the Oak Mountain area, but originally I’m from the small, one-redlight town of Grant in North Alabama. I attended Auburn University where I met my husband, a Birmingham native, and married him a couple of months after getting my Bachelors degree in 2011. Although I studied PreMed/Microbiology, I have never actually worked in the field. Instead, I have had many random jobs from seamstress to private English tutor while helping my husband through seminary. Now I have my dream job of being a stay-at-home-mom to my two daughters; E is 6 and M is 4. Although my original dream of living overseas full-time isn’t likely to happen anytime soon, I am still involved in the internationals’ ministry at my church. When I’m not busy with my girls or church, you can find me cooking, listening to music or podcasts, reading, or drinking coffee while doing any of the above.
