As a native Mobilian, I grow nostalgic this time of year for all the things I love most about Mardi Gras. One of the highlights of the season is undoubtedly king cake! I have happy memories of classmates bringing king cakes to share at school and everyone being giddy with excitement over who would find the hidden baby. Having lived in Birmingham for several years now, I’ve discovered that you don’t have to visit Mobile or New Orleans for a slice of this festive treat. Delicious king cakes can be found at several businesses throughout the Magic City! Here are some places to get king cake in Birmingham to complete your Mardi Gras.

Edgar’s

Well-known for their beautiful cakes and other bakery selections, it’s no surprise that Edgar’s makes a delicious king cake. I served one of these at a Mardi Gras dinner party last year, and everyone raved about it! Flavors include strawberry cream cheese, cream cheese, pecan praline, and traditional. Regular cakes are $35, and a mini is just $17. Order online and pick up from one of their several locations.

Heavenly Donut Co

If you’re looking for something a little different than the traditional route but still want a Mardi Gras treat, Heavenly Donut Co has you covered! Their king cake donuts feature vanilla glaze, sprinkles, and a plastic baby to top it off. King cake donuts are available in their store daily.

Hero Doughnuts

Imagine one of Hero’s gourmet brioche doughnuts transformed into a giant brioche doughnut filled with milk jam and covered in their OG vanilla glaze, cream cheese icing, AND sprinkles, and you have one pretty amazing king cake. King cakes come in one size and are available by pre-order for $35. Order online for pickup at any of their Birmingham-area locations.

Homewood Gourmet

Co-owned by a chef with New Orleans roots, Homewood Gourmet offers a king cake as legit as they come. Traditional cinnamon flavored cakes are available for $30, and cream cheese filled cakes for $40. A few cakes are available each day, but the best way to ensure you get one is by pre-ordering. Give them a call at 205-871-1620 or send them an email at [email protected] to order yours!

Savages’s Bakery

Made with their signature homemade pastry dough, Savage’s king cakes are sweet and decadent! Choose between traditional cinnamon flavor or cream cheese filled. Small cakes come in at $20.95 and large at $24.95. They are available in the shop daily and by pre-order through their website.

Fat Tuesday is February 13th, and these celebratory desserts are only here for the season, so get them while they last. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
