The Preserves are undeveloped lands around our lakes that will remain in a natural state for generations to come. They feature hiking trails, picnic areas, fishing piers, playgrounds, boat launches and resting spots for everyone to enjoy. Each of our state’s lakes and streams have some of the most topographically and ecologically diverse property surrounding them. From highlands with rock outcroppings to bottom lands with moist rich soil, The Preserves are a celebration of these lands. They are designed to be used and open for all to enjoy. In total, there are more than 70 public-use properties around our lakes.

Lake Harris (Wedowee)
What you don’t want to miss about Lake Harris (Wedowee)…
Little Fox at Lake Harris :: Little Fox is a day-use area at Lake Harris and has miles of walking trails, acres of pollinator plots, numerous places to fish along the water, and unique gazebos and benches.
Flat Rock Park at Lake Harris :: Flat Rock Park is a popular sunbathing and fishing spot on the shores of Lake Harris. Visitors flock to this unique park each year. Amenities include pavilions, picnic tables, grills, restrooms, swimming and fishing areas and a nature trail.
Flat Rock Preserve Trail at Lake Harris :: A day-use area at Lake Harris with fishing, hiking trails, lakeside benches, a playground, picnic and grilling areas and a swimming area. The park is named after an incredible slab of rock that serves as a beautiful place for the numerous picnic spots and lakeside shelters. It starts at the edge of the playground and slopes out to the waterside.
H. Neely Henry Lake

Ten Islands Historic Park and Trail at H. Neely Henry Lake :: The Ten Islands Historic Park and Trail provides a place for lake lovers and fishermen to relax, launch boats, picnic, and enjoy the calm beauty of one of state’s less trafficked lakes. This is a day-use park with swimming, picnicking, fishing, nature trail, boat ramp and an historic site. It also offers excellent birding and is a spot along the Alabama Birding Trail.

As you traverse over 3 miles of trails, discover unique gazebos, their enchanting structures nestled amidst the vibrant foliage, overlooking the glistening waters of Lake Jordan.
Jordan’s Journey also boasts an array of fishing piers, strategically positioned to offer prime angling opportunities to both seasoned enthusiasts and beginners alike.
Lay Lake

Beeswax Creek at Lay Lake :: Developed in partnership with Shelby County, Beeswax Creek is an expansive and well-appointed recreation area at Lay Lake with multiple fishing piers, two playgrounds – one with basketball courts, picnic areas and a canoe-in campground. Beeswax Creek also features a fish weigh-in area to support the excellent fishing on Lay Lake. New in 2019 was the addition of pollinator paths to enhance bee habitat around the state’s lakes.
Logan Martin Lake
What you don’t want to miss about this lake…
Double Cove Park (also known as Logan Martin Dam Park) :: Double Cove Park is located on the eastern edge of the embankment and includes the Logan Martin Picnic Area. This area provides visitors a relaxing spot to take in views of the lake, the dam, and skiers through the lake’s most visited slalom course. The park has 19 structures that includes a fishing pier, grills, pavilions, playground, and picnic tables. The park is open from sunrise to sunset.

Barrett’s Park at Lake Mitchell :: Barrett’s Park is one of Alabama Power’s newest day-use parks. Barrett’s Park is an ideal place for families to come and enjoy the lake. The park provides boater access and parking, a pier and boardwalk along the water, public restrooms, grills, picnic tables, fishing, and swimming. The park has even hosted bass tournaments launch from its shores because of its great boat launch and fishing.
Smith Lake

Smith Lake has 2 main amenities with opportunities to experience fun on and around the water: Smith Dam Ramp and Smith Trout Steam.
