Early Prenatal Care and Birth Planning: Perinatal Nurse Navigation

Finding out you are expecting can be really exciting yet navigating healthcare in a medical system can sometimes feel overwhelming. During this important phase of life, perinatal nurse navigation offers valuable support and resources for new and expecting parents that can help get their parenting journey off to a healthy start.

Perinatal nurse navigators are dedicated and experienced nursing professionals that work with expectant mothers. They are often the first contact, providing early prenatal education and assisting in birth planning. These nurses serve as a bridge between patients and the health care system. Their role is to ensure the perinatal journey is well-informed, personalized, and as stress-free as possible. With their support, you’ll feel empowered and ready for the months ahead.

Expert Prenatal Care: CRNPs, CNMs, and MDs

Throughout pregnancy, mothers will receive expert prenatal care from a multidisciplinary team of experts in the field of maternal and fetal care. This includes Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNPs), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), and Medical Doctors (MDs). The providers work closely together to monitor your health and your baby’s development, tailoring your care plan to your unique needs. It can include routine care for a low-risk pregnancy or more specialized attention for a high-risk pregnancy. Each member of the team brings their expertise and dedication to ensure all patients receive the best possible care.

Low-risk prenatal care is available through UAB Womens & Infants Services across eight conveniently located offices in Jefferson and Blount Counties. The team comprises 17 OBGYN MDs, 10 CRNPs, and four CNMs. Together, they provide comprehensive and accessible prenatal care. This ensures every patient receives personalized attention and expert medical guidance throughout their pregnancy journey.

Should pregnancy become high-risk, your OBGYN will collaborate closely with in-house UAB maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists, neonatologists, and OB Anesthesiologists. These specialists bring advanced expertise in managing complex maternal and fetal conditions. This integrated approach guarantees seamless coordination between the OBGYN team and maternal-fetal medicine experts, prioritizing your health and the well- being of your baby every step of the way.

Our team of OB Fellowship trained anesthesiologists are experts in the field of managing anesthesia for high-risk pregnancies, enhancing patient safety and outcomes during childbirth with advanced skills in pain management, complex maternal-fetal care, and emergency procedures.

“Our MFM team takes great pride in collaborating closely with our obstetrics colleagues to guarantee that every patient receives an individualized care plan, addressing high-risk pregnancy conditions and potential complications. We are committed to optimizing outcomes for both mothers and babies by providing access to the highest level of maternal and infant care, while also ensuring patients have an active role in all medical decisions.”

Delivery Experience: Collaborative Care in Action

When the big day arrives, a team of CNMs and MDs works alongside highly trained labor and delivery nurses to provide a safe and supportive birth experience. Although CNMs may not available 24/7, every team is highly specialized to provide the best care. Labor and delivery nurses have extensive training in low-intervention techniques, such as Spinning Babies. This technique is designed to help facilitate labor progress and create a more comfortable birthing experience.

UAB believes in supportive care during your labor. The team makes sure mothers feel empowered and supported during delivery. Whether you’re seeking a low-intervention, natural birth or require medical assistance, professionals guide and support you in creating a birth experience that is uniquely yours.
