Hannah and Lucy’s Story :: Discovering Hope and Support at The Bell Center

The Bell Center Early Intervention ProgramWhen Lucy Trammell entered the world, she brought with her a story of resilience and hope. Her parents, Hannah and Taylor, had prepared for her arrival with excitement and anticipation. However, at Hannah’s anatomy scan during pregnancy, they learned that Lucy would be born with a clubbed foot. What they didn’t anticipate was that Lucy’s journey would include much more: bilateral hip, knee, and elbow dislocations, as well as a cleft palate. Thankfully, the Bell Center Early Intervention Program would be there to help them navigate all of this new information.

Lucy’s entrance into the world was marked by challenges. “We had a beautiful planned home birth with a wonderful midwife who helped keep us calm when Lucy came out with her feet touching her shoulders,” shared Hannah. “We were terrified of what her noticeable physical deformities meant for her anatomy on the inside, so after spending a few hours at home, we drove to the hospital where we were admitted.”

The following weeks were a whirlwind of medical tests and meetings with specialists. Extensive genetic testing revealed that Lucy had Larsen Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting approximately 1 in 100,000 people. While her diagnosis came with the expectation of multiple reconstructive surgeries in the future, her medical team emphasized the critical role of therapy in her physical and mental development.

Finding The Bell Center

As Hannah and Taylor navigated their new reality, several friends suggested they explore The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs in Birmingham. The Bell Center is a lifeline for families of children with developmental delays and special needs, offering a wide range of therapies, classes, and resources designed to help children reach their full potential.

Their first experience with The Bell Center came during an infant massage class. “We got to meet with physical and occupational therapists, a speech-language pathologist, and an early childhood special education teacher,” Hannah explained. “After spending one-on-one time with each therapist and experiencing how gentle and inviting the whole center was, we knew this was the right place for Lucy.”

Hannah described the initial sessions as transformative. “They were so gentle and made us feel so comfortable during those infant massage classes. I was still very much in a postpartum fog, trying to navigate the newness of having a child with special needs. The team at The Bell Center made us feel seen and heard and really just gave us hope for the potential that Lucy had to thrive in therapy.”

Tremendous Strides in Development

Since beginning therapy at The Bell Center Early Intervention Program, Lucy has made incredible progress. “She is now able to completely roll over, eat purees and most solids by mouth, drink from a honey bear cup, reach and grasp onto toys, sit up in a seat, sit for short periods of time unassisted, say words, and she is so close to holding her head up during tummy time,” Hannah shared. These milestones are not just achievements for Lucy; they represent the collective efforts of a dedicated team of therapists and her family’s unwavering support.

For the Trammells, The Bell Center has become a cornerstone of their lives. “The first year of Lucy’s life has been spent navigating so many medical unknowns, so it has been such a blessing to have The Bell Center as one of the few constants in our lives,” Hannah expressed. “I am so thankful for the way our team of therapists continues to believe in her and push her to reach her full potential while coaching our family on the best ways to support her growth and development at home.”
