5 Birmingham Organizations for Family Volunteering This Fall

As autumn approaches and the holiday season creeps up, hands-on volunteering is one of the most grounded, meaningful ways we can slow down, connect as a family, and bless our Birmingham neighbors. Whether you’re looking to start a new family tradition, give your kids a front-row seat to hospitality and gratitude, or even just need to clock in those high-school service hours, these 5 Birmingham organizations offer fantastic ways to serve together this fall.

1. Grace Klein Community

Grace Klein Community offers a lively, energetic environment where families can jump into the heart of service, food rescue, and caring for our neighbors. Few organizations have such a wide-impact in our area as Grace Klein Community. At their drive-thru food distributions, children of all ages can pitch in by packing and sorting rescued groceries from local cafes and markets.

They also have several locations (Bessemer, Pelham, & Clay) where they need help sorting donated household goods to stock in their free “Give and Take Rooms”. Or if you only have a few minutes here and there between drop-offs or practices, the whole family can participate in a food rescue run to pick up and transport surplus food items directly to local distribution points in Bessemer and Hoover (just to name a few). This is an active, joyful way for kids to see the immediate impact of sharing resources with local families.

2. Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank

Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank “desires to help all families experiencing ‘diaper need’ due to financial hardship by providing them with diapers at no cost.” With such a great need, they can use help of all ages! They turn community service into a fun, hands-on team effort for children from toddlers to teens. During family bundling sessions, kids can sort, count, label, and wrap diapers into neatly organized packages by size. Even the youngest helpers can participate by applying size stickers to packages or stacking finished bundles, giving them a tangible role in supporting local mothers and babies.

Of course, they always need funds if you can help financially. They have an Amazon Wish List, which makes it so easy to help them out with current needs. Additionally, if you want to really make an impact or help your children grow those leadership skills, they could help to coordinate a diaper drive at their school, your workplace, church, or even among their sports team! There are so many ways to help meet the “diaper need” in our community.

3. First Light Shelter

First Light Shelter creates a welcoming space for families to practice genuine hospitality together in downtown Birmingham. Families can sign up to plan, prepare, and serve a warm, home-cooked meal for the women and children staying at the shelter. They serve roughly 50 people for breakfast and dinner, and 30 for lunch, everyday. You can prepare food onsite or bring prepared or purchased food – lots of options for busy families!

Children can take the lead on setting up the dining area, serving food, or assembling personal care kits filled with cozy socks, warm toiletries, and handwritten notes of encouragement to brighten someone’s day. There are sometimes opportunities for volunteers to lead fun activities for the guests like movie nights, games, or parties.

4. Firehouse Ministries

Firehouse Ministries offers an enriching, heart-centered opportunity for parents and older children (ages 8 and up) to step out and serve their community directly. Firehouse Ministries provides shelter and support to men experiencing homelessness in Birmingham. Families can spend a fall morning or evening plating and serving warm meals at the emergency shelter. Options include simply serving a meal, but can also include planning, buying, or bringing prepared food. Cooking a favorite dish at home to serve directly allows kids to practice active respect, kindness, and direct care for neighbors navigating challenging times.

This is a great option if you want to team up with another family and serve together! It’s easy to see available times and sign-up right on their website.

5. Greater Birmingham Humane Society

Greater Birmingham Humane Society has some great opportunities for animal-loving children to make a difference. Both in-person and at home options exist! At home and in the community, families can work together to collect and organize much-needed seasonal supplies from the shelter’s wish list, or spend a cozy afternoon crafting simple fleece tie-blankets and enrichment toys. Dropping off these handmade gifts at the shelter allows kids to take pride in bringing comfort to pets while they await their forever homes.

There are some fun clubs for children, beginning at Kindergarten, which provide a nice introduction to volunteering. For older children, including middle and high school, GBHS has designated volunteer groups that sound amazing. For more info on those, check out their website. Don’t forget that fostering a pet is another way to volunteer as a family and teaches many valuable life-skills in responsibility.
