Birmingham’s Best Burgers & Fries

I grew up having burgers at my grandmother’s house every Saturday night. There is no burger like my Granny Rosie’s burgers. They were hand-pattied, made to order in the iron skillet or on the grill. I am a burger snob and I come by it honestly. But, even the best burger can be ruined by its accompanying fries. The fries complement the burger, and it is important to know the type of fry you are getting when you head out for a burger in Birmingham. I prefer a fresh, hand-cut fry. You may prefer a skinny, crispy fry. No matter your preference, I’m breaking down the best burgers Birmingham has to offer by their complementary fry style.

Skinny Cut

Go to Back Forty Beer Company and get the Back 40 Cheeseburger. Of course you’ll need a cold glass of one of their many beers on tap to go with that burger.

You can also go to one of Baha Burger’s two locations and choose a gourmet burger from their menu. Baha’s fries are skinny, with regular and sweet potato options. (You can also get tater tots!) And, if you can’t choose one style, do a basket of half and half fries.

Crinkle Cut

At Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint you can get basic burgers, specialty burgers, and daily specials with a side of crinkle cut fries.

Also, I can’t write a post about the best burgers and fries in Birmingham without a shout out to Milo’s. Everybody goes to Milo’s for their burgers and crinkle cut seasoned fries that are made perfect when dipped in their special sauce that drips from their burgers.

Sweet Potato Style

Whiskey Fox Trot has several gourmet burgers on their menu and all of them pair well with their sweet potato fries. But, guess what? They aren’t just any sweet potato fries, they are sweet potato waffle cut fries and they are delicious!

Hand Cut Style

Martin’s BBQ calls their fries “Farmhand Fries”. They are perfectly crispy on outside and cut just right to balance that crisp with the potato-y inside. Martin’s has a regular cheeseburger on their menu, but you will want to order the brisket burger to go with those Farmhand Fries, trust me.

Fancy Fries

These burger and fries combinations are a little pricier and are served in a fancier setting than your regular burger joint. Chez Fonfon is a classic French bistro but it is known for its juicy burger. The burger comes with pommes frites. Fancy schmancy, right? It’s just skinny fries, but calling them pommes frites feels appropriate.

Also, I have a secret. Food Bar has an outstanding burger, but it’s not on their menu. You’ll have to request the burger on their secret menu. It comes with perfectly cooked hand-cut fries. In my opinion, you won’t find a better burger and fries combination in Birmingham.

Airplane Style

Ok, so it’s technically not a fry style. But, did you know you can enjoy a delicious burger and fries while watching planes land and take off nearby at the Birmingham Airport? Alpha Charlie Grill gives you a front row seat to the runway while you eat from an aviation themed menu! How fun is that?
