Homewood’s Central Park is Updated & Better than Ever

updated Homewood Central Park in Birmingham, AlabamaThe newly updated Homewood Central Park playground is now open! As Homewood residents who love to be outside, my family spends a lot of time at this park. Over the past few months, we’ve watched the work being done and eagerly anticipated the reopening of one of our favorite spots. We are so happy it’s back open and even happier with the new equipment and features! Here are five things to love about the newly renovated Homewood Central Park playground:

Accessibility

The newly renovated playground is the first full-scale playground in Homewood that is ADA compliant and suitable for kids of all abilities. It features a ramp at the entrance, a surface suitable for wheelchairs and crutches, and play areas that kids of all abilities can enjoy. All kids should have a safe and fun place to play and be with friends. I’m so happy for our community to have a place like this!

Turf

One of my favorite updates is the playground’s surface. The former playground had mulch that always got stuck in our shoes and was uncomfortable when my child inevitably took a tumble. The new turf, or “playground grass,” is amazing! Not only does it look like beautiful green grass, it’s also durable, soft, and has antimicrobial properties that prevent the growth of bacteria. I’m especially thrilled that I can easily push a stroller on it and let my youngest crawl around without any issues!

Ninja Course

Not only can kids swing and slide at the playground, now they can test their abilities on the new “ninja” course! Kids complete several obstacles before finishing at a climbing wall similar to that on “American Ninja Warrior.” I love this fun and unique element that encourages kids to be active and get out some energy.

Shade

With summer quickly approaching, I’m thankful that the new playground provides more much-needed shade. Swing sets and several benches have shade coverings over them so we can all get a break from the sun on those really hot days!

Equipment for All Ages

Whether you have a crawler, toddler, or older kids, you will find something for your child to enjoy among the new equipment. The variety includes big and small slides, an array of climbing structures, swings for babies and kids, a parent-child swing, STEM areas that are low to the ground, a Gaga ball pit, and much more. The increased variety makes the updated playground an ideal spot for kids of all ages.
