Since opening its doors in 1984, The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs has served as a cornerstone of support for Alabama families. The dedicated staff at The Bell Center works tirelessly to maximize the potential of young children from birth to age three who face developmental challenges.
A Mission Rooted in Possibility
The Bell Center believes every child deserves the strongest possible start in life. Its center-based therapy programs support infants and toddlers at risk for developmental delays caused by various factors. Children do not need a genetic diagnosis to receive services. The team often assists children born prematurely or with low birth weight, torticollis, or delays in meeting milestones.
Therapy focuses on critical areas such as:
- Gross motor skills
- Feeding
- Language development
- Social engagement
“For more than 40 years, The Bell Center has provided the highest quality early intervention services in the central Alabama area,” said Jeannie Colquett, Executive Director of The Bell Center. “But just as importantly, we’ve given parents hope for their child’s future and walked with them in an uncertain and sometimes frightening time. Our staff is caring, compassionate, and determined to maximize the potential of every child who comes through our doors.”
Whether a child is struggling to sit independently, transition to solid foods, follow directions, or engage socially, The Bell Center is here to help families navigate these early years with confidence.
A Transdisciplinary Model That Sets The Standard
What truly sets The Bell Center apart is its transdisciplinary team approach. Each of the five therapy teams integrates:
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Speech-language pathology
- Early childhood special education
This collaborative model ensures every child receives customized, comprehensive care that addresses all developmental areas in every session.
Children attend therapy twice a week, working consistently with the same team throughout the year. This continuity builds strong relationships among therapists, families, and children, fostering trust, measurable progress, and lasting growth.
A Community of Support
Being center-based offers much more than therapeutic services—it builds a strong, supportive community. Families often find themselves surrounded by others on similar journeys. Through shared experiences, parents and caregivers create meaningful connections, develop lasting support systems, and celebrate their children’s progress together.
Rachel Hamm, the mother of a Bell Center graduate, shared her experience:

“At 23 weeks pregnant, I received a diagnosis for our little girl: a major heart defect and Down syndrome. We were told we could lose her at any minute and that her developmental delays would completely change our lives. But as we reached out for support, so many people lit up when they told us about The Bell Center. They said it would be exactly what we needed—and they were right.
From the moment Evelyn began therapy at four weeks old, The Bell Center was a lifeline. The therapists didn’t just help Evelyn thrive—they helped me thrive. They welcomed us into a world we never expected and showed us that we could do this. What you may not immediately see is how our entire family has flourished. We are better because of The Bell Center.”
Stories like Evelyn’s are a testament to the heart of The Bell Center: empowering families while discovering every child’s potential.
Committed to Access and Inclusion
The Bell Center makes sure that cost never becomes a barrier to early intervention. Financial assistance is available to qualifying families, and the team works closely with each one to ensure access to the care their child needs.
More than a therapy center, The Bell Center is a place of hope, growth, and connection. Every program reflects a belief in each child’s abilities and a deep commitment to helping families thrive.
If you or someone you know could benefit from early intervention services, we invite you to take the screening tests on The Bell Center website or contact them directly for more information.
