National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed every year from September 15th to October 15th in the US. This is a great time for families of all backgrounds to learn about and celebrate Hispanic culture, history, influence, and the community’s achievements. Now, I’m a homebody, so I totally understand wanting to stay in, watch a movie, and grab some take-out as part of your celebration. But, if you’d prefer to get out of the house, here are some great ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Birmingham!
Local Events
1. ¡HICA! Sabor y Cultura | Flavor & Culture
When: Friday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Jones Valley Teaching Farm
Details: ¡HICA! invites you to support Sabor y Cultura | Flavor & Culture, a special fundraising dinner in Birmingham supporting Latinos and Immigrant families in Alabama. This remarkable event combines the celebration of Hispanic culture and cuisine, creating a heartwarming cultural experience, with appetizers from Jesus Mendez-Fragoso, a mulit-course dinner from Chef Ramon Gonzales and Executive Chef Alberto Padrón, and cocktails by Jose de Jesus Medina Camacho. There will also be featured art from Javi Garcia and Roscoe Hall, as well as music provided by Angel “Suaze” Perez.
2. Fiesta BHAM
When: Saturday, September 27 from noon–8 p.m.
Where: Linn Park
Details: Alabama’s largest cultural festival is almost here! It features a range of villages, including culture, food, health & wellness, community, and more. There will also be performances by top local and international artists. Advance tickets are available for $15; children 12 and under enter free. Donations to the Fiesta scholarship fund at Fiesta are encouraged at the event.
3. Latin American Heritage Festival
When: Saturday, October 4, 1:00–5:00 p.m.
Where: Birmingham Museum of Art
Details: Celebrate Latin American traditions at the Birmingham Museum of Art during their annual Latin American Heritage Festival. This vibrant day includes bilingual Spanish art explorations, engaging arts and crafts for families, face painting, and performances by audience favorite Orquesta MaCuba. While at the BMA, also be sure to check out the Museum’s newly reopened gallery for Ancient American Art, including pieces from the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
