The holiday season is here, ushering in a much-anticipated time of cheer, festivities, and giving to others. Supporting those in need this Christmas couldn’t be easier or more fun thanks to these 7 local holiday events that are giving back to our community!
1. Glenwood Pecan Sale
When: November 1 – January 11
Where: Online, with shipping and local pick up available
What to expect: Glenwood’s pecan shop includes an array of sweet and savory pecans and treats that make great holiday gifts. All purchases support Glenwood’s services for children, adults, and families affected by autism and behavioral health needs.
2. Market Noel
When: November 19-22
Where: The Finley Center
What to expect: Hosted by The Junior League of Birmingham, Market Noel features dozens of vendors to shop from and several special events, including a preview shopping night with a silent auction and a breakfast with Santa. Funds raised through the event go directly to the JLB’s 22 community projects and their work with local nonprofits.
3. ¡HICA! Tamale Sale
When: Order November 21 – December 7, pick up December 9-11
Where: Online, pick up at ¡HICA!
What to Expect: Order delicious tamales to enjoy at home and help support ¡HICA!’s mission to empower Latinos in Alabama. The sale brings the local Latino community together to share in the beloved holiday tradition of preparing and sharing tamales.
4. Snapshots with Santa hosted by the Children’s Harbor Junior Board
When: November 22, 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.
Where: The Market at Pepper Place
What to expect: Santa and Mrs. Claus are making a special visit to The Market at Pepper Place! This festive morning includes pictures with the big guy, crafts, and the opportunity to write letters to Santa. Kids and pets are welcome. Donations raised will go directly to Children’s Harbor’s Family Emergency Assistance Fund, which aids families of seriously ill children.
5. The Polar Express at Alabama Theatre
When: December 13, 2:00 p.m.
Where: Alabama Theatre
What to expect: Bring the kids to the iconic Alabama Theatre for a special viewing of The Polar Express on the big screen. Ticket sales benefit Kid One Transport, which provides transportation to children and expectant mothers to necessary health care services.
6. Christmas Over the Mountain at Hunter Street Baptist Church
When: December 12-14
Where: Hunter Street Baptist Church
What to Expect: Bring the whole family to enjoy a live musical performance filled with holiday favorites and the telling of the Christmas story. You can also sign up for pictures with Santa! Ticket sales will aid foster families in the Over the Mountain community.
7. Merry Mahj for a Cause with Bird Bam Besties
When: December 15, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.
Where: Haven
What to expect: This fun evening will include two hours of open play along with heavy hors d’oeuvres, festive cocktails, live music, and amazing giveaways all in the beautiful event space at Haven! Proceeds from the event will go directly to Alabama Baptist Children’s Home.
