Call me crazy, but I love our family photos each year. Yes, the day may be a little chaotic, but the pictures are a reminder of how quickly my children are growing. Those precious memories help me to slow down and savor every sweet moment. Over the years, I have picked up a few tips for family photos that can help family picture day be less stressful and perhaps even a little fun!
1. Know Your Photographer
We have used the same photographer for years, which is great because I know her style and how she will relate to my family. When looking for a new photographer, check their portfolio to be sure your vision aligns with their preferences and strengths. Can’t find a photographer you like? 2. Choose Your Clothes First
Moms, choose your clothes first! Wear something that you like and that you feel beautiful in. From there, find outfits for the rest of the family that compliment yours. If you need inspiration, search online for “family photo outfit ideas” and add the colors you want to use. I also recommend laying everything out on a neutral background and taking a picture. The photo gives you a better overall view of how everything will come together.
3. Don’t Skip Nap or Snack Time
We all already know that kids (and adults) do better, behave better, smile better when they are well rested and have a full tummy. This is not the day to skimp on sleep or nutrition. Also, stay on your regular schedule as much as you can since most children do well with routine.
If your crew is really having an off day, like the time my son had hand, foot, and mouth on picture day, call your photographer. Sometimes it is impossible to reschedule, but most photographers would rather see you on a good day and be able to capture great memories.
4. Let Their Personalities Shine
When my silly 2 year old insisted on wearing his rugged cowboy boots instead of the sweet church shoes I chose for pictures, we just went with it. We received so many compliments on how cute he was in them that he wore cowboy boots the following year too, but this time it was my choice! Sometimes our kids just know better than we do. Let them wear the superman cape or hold their favorite lovey if they want. That’s what memories are really made of.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Bribe
I know, you really want the picture without Elmo in it, right? Here’s where bribes come in. Whatever motivates your family, now is a good time to use it. Your family is giving you the gift of family pictures, so the least you can do is show them a little extra love in return.
6. Have Low Expectations
I’ve found a direct correlation between my kids’ ages and the number of non-crazy pictures we end up with. Usually the tiny ones do well if they are rested and well fed, 1-4 years old is like herding cats, and around 4 or 5 years, they start to act like normal human beings. If you only get one good picture, then you have your Christmas card and a new picture to hang on the wall. Job well done.
7. Fall In Love With Imperfection
The perfectionist in me tends to like the traditional (some may say boring) pictures with everyone smiling like the “picture perfect” family that we are not. In the past few years I have challenged myself to pay more attention to the less than perfect images. I found myself loving the pictures with my son’s head thrown back in laughter, or my daughter’s eyes turned on my husband in an adoring glance. Look for it, and you will see those pictures that give a glimpse into the sweet hearts of your family members.
8. Smile
If the photo shoot seems to be going downhill, just smile and enjoy being with your crazy family that you love. Sometimes your photographer and family will surprise you with the perfect shot!
9. Timing is Everything
My family loves the mini sessions lasting 20-30 minutes that many photographers offer around the holidays, Any longer, and someone starts to get a little too silly or cranky.
10. DIY Photos
If you can’t find a photographer with an opening, or if pictures aren’t in the budget this year, don’t despair! Here are some bonus tips if you want to try your hand at being the photographer this year.
-
Choose Your Lighting
Outdoor pictures are easier and require less equipment, and dawn or dusk are usually the best times for the most flattering pictures.
-
Camera
The most important thing about a camera is that you know how to use it. If you have a nice camera and don’t know how to use it, this is not the time to try it out. Modern phone cameras have exceptional technology, take great photos, and usually have the capability to do minor edits. Before gathering everyone together, familiarize yourself with your camera’s phone and how to set a timer for taking pictures so you can be in at least one family picture.
-
Camera stand
You will need a tripod to hold the camera steady. There are many options online, and you can even find some with built in lighting to take the work out of getting the lighting just right.
-
Easy Editing Software
If you want more editing than your phone allows, consider learning about photo editing software, like Photoshop or Lightroom. Tutorials are available and make these systems easy to learn, even for beginners.
