In 1923, Alabama Power began building Lake Martin Dam. In 1926, the walls of the dam were closed for the first time, creating what was at that time the world’s largest artificial body of water. Almost a century later, Lake Martin is a beloved spot to relax and play for many Alabamians. While a lot of fun can be had at Lake Martin in the summer, it is a beautiful place throughout the year and offers great activities and opportunities for memory making in every season. Below are 9 things to do in the fall at Lake Martin.
1. Russell Crossroads
Russell Crossroads is the perfect spot to spend a few hours during an autumn visit to Lake Martin. In addition to three delicious restaurant options—Catherine’s, Spring House, and Fannie’s—there is also a coffee shop called Bru 63. Russell Forest Trails are great for hiking or biking. For animal lovers, The Stables offers horseback riding on beautiful trails. You can also see horses and Watusi cattle grazing in a pasture and hens nesting nearby. My kids always ask to stop by the Naturalist Cabin where Marianne Gauldin, a naturalist and wildlife educator, has hands-on exhibits to teach kids of all ages about the plants and animals that call Lake Martin their home.
At the Company Store, you can enjoy shopping while your kids play on the nearby playground. There are also bicycles, paddle boats, paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes available to rent so that you can enjoy the fall weather on the water.

2. Wind Creek State Park
Wind Creek State Park is a short drive from Russell Crossroads. You can spend the night at the campgrounds or in one of their cabins or cottages. For a unique camping experience, book a glamping safari tent for the weekend!
Wind Creek also offers many fun activities including horseback riding, archery, fishing, putt putt, and hiking. For those who like a thrill, the Zipline Canopy Tour is a must! Check their website for dates and times activities are available, as they are subject to change with the seasons.

3. Smith Mountain Fire Tower
The Smith Mountain Fire Tower was built in 1939 and enabled watchmen to guard the forest and prevent large forest fires. Due to advances in fire detection, the tower was eventually no longer needed and closed in the 1980s. The tower was recently restored, and the 780 foot structure offers spectacular views of Lake Martin. There are also nearby trails to explore and enjoy.

4. The Preserves
The Preserves are undeveloped areas of land at Lake Martin that are protected by Alabama Power. The goal is to preserve the natural state of the land for generations to come. This property is home to several great trails and areas to hunt and fish.

5. Golf Courses
Whether you have a full set of clubs or just want to play putt putt, Lake Martin offers several options for families who enjoy golf.
Willow Point and Wicker Point are both award-winning private golf courses with beautiful lake front views. If you know a member, it is worth asking if you can play with them while you are visiting Lake Martin.
Lake Winds and Still Waters have nice golf courses that are open to the public. At Wind Creek State Park, you will find an 18 hole putt-putt course that the entire family will love.

6. Horseshoe Bend
Horseshoe Bend is a National Military Park in Daviston, just a short drive from Lake Martin. At this location in 1814, Major General Andrew Jackson defeated the Creek Indians in a battle that would be a turning point in his journey toward becoming President of the United States. 7. Lake Martin Hiking Challenge
If your family loves hiking together, there are several hiking trails to explore at Lake Martin. Complete the Lake Martin Hiking Challenge by conquering all of its wonderful trails.
8. Water Activities
The water level at Lake Martin begins to lower in the fall, but there are still many regions of the lake that are deep enough for kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing, and boating. Bring your life jackets and know how deep the water is in your area since boats can easily be damaged in shallow waters.
9. Treasure Hunting
When the water level lowers, the shoreline can reveal lost treasures from the past summer. My children love exploring the land that was once underwater. We have found a few toys, swim goggles, soda cans, and golf balls, but no real treasure… yet!
